The electronic waste (e-waste) recycling program run by the Ecology Center is a unique and innovative community based program that allows residents to dispose of unwanted or broken electronics in an environmentally responsible way. We started the program in 2003 and offer free collection events in neighborhoods throughout the city, accepting computers, monitors and peripherals (printers, keyboards and mice) as well as TV's and cell phones. For a full list of acceptable items please see our FAQ section.
Since 2004 the Ecology Center has also worked with the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and other advocacy groups to support the New York City Council to pass e-waste legislation based on the principle of extended producer responsibility (EPR). In 2008 New York City became the first municipality to pass an electronic waste recycling law, Local Law 13 of 2008. The law makes electronics manufacturers responsible for the end of life of their products and thereby gives manufacturers an incentive to design electronic equipment that can be easily recycled by reducing the amount of toxic materials used in the production. Such a shift to green designs will benefit everyone, from workers producing and recycling the equipment, to all the avoided environmental degradation associated with using toxic materials.
With this new law in effect, which will make the disposal of electronics in the trash illegal for New York City households by July 1, 2010 the Ecology Center is looking forward to working with all stakeholders to develop programs that will make recycling of electronics accessible and convenient to all New Yorkers. Additionally, to capture the full potential of discarded electronics, the Ecology Center would like to develop a Reuse Program, making electronics available at low or no cost to New Yorkers.

Our friend Vito Turso at the Dept. Of Sanitation wants us to know that he needs people to work clearing snow off the roads in preparation for the upcoming Winter season. Snow Laborers Clear Step Streets After Major Winter StormsLong before the first snowflakes fall on New York City's 6,000 miles of streets, the Department of Sanitation has begun gearing up for the impending 2009-2010 snow season.
The Department is now registering emergency laborers who can be called upon to remove snow and ice from step streets in sections of Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island after heavy snowfalls. The laborers generally focus on the City's step streets, which are sets of stairwells located between avenues to connect streets that have a significant height differential. The rate of pay begins at $12 per hour and increases to $18 per hour, after completing the first 40 hours. "Although most snow removal duties citywide are handled by the dedicated men and women of the Sanitation Department, emergency snow laborers are vital to the clearing of massive amounts of snow and ice from step streets, as well as around bus stops and crosswalks," said Commissioner Doherty.
Those interested in registering can do so at the following Sanitation Department garages, which encompass the areas with the majority of step streets, weekdays between the hours of 7 A.M. to 3 P.M.:*Manhattan 12301 West 215th Street, between 9th Avenue & Harlem River * Bronx 4720 East 132nd Street, between Willow Avenue & Bruckner Expressway * Bronx 51331 Cromwell Avenue, between 168th & 170th Streets * Bronx 7 and 8423 West 215th Street, between 9th & 10th Avenues* Queens West 252-35 58th Street, between 53rd Avenue & 58th Street * Staten Island 1539 Jersey Street, between Victory Boulevard & Brook Street (View Garages and Retrieve Directions):
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dsny/html/ab...rage.shtml#BX7Interested individuals can also register at any other local garage between the hours of 7 A.M. to 3 P.M.Applicants must be over 18 years of age, be eligible to work in the United States, and capable of performing heavy physical labor. All applicants must bring two (2) small photos (1 ½" square), and two (2) documents that prove identity and employment eligibility, such as a driver's license; federal, state or local identification; school identification with photo, or passport, at the time of registration. In this quirky dark comedy inspired by a real life story you will hardly believe is actually true, astonishing revelations about a top-secret wing of the U.S. military come to light when a reporter encounters an enigmatic Special Forces operator on a mind-boggling mission. Reporter Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) is in search of his next big story when he encounters Lyn Cassady (Academy Award winner George Clooney), a shadowy figure who claims to be part of an experimental U.S. military unit. According to Cassady, the New Earth Army is changing the way wars are fought. A legion of “Warrior Monks” with unparalleled psychic powers can read the enemy’s thoughts, pass through solid walls, and even kill a goat simply by staring at it. Now, the program’s founder, Bill Django (Oscar nominee Jeff Bridges), has gone missing and Cassady’s mission is to find him. Intrigued by his new acquaintance’s far-fetched stories, Bob impulsively decides to accompany him on the search. When the pair tracks Django to a clandestine training camp run by renegade psychic Larry Hooper (two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey), the reporter is trapped in the middle of a grudge match between the forces of Django’s New Earth Army and Hooper’s personal militia of super soldiers. In order to survive this wild adventure, Bob will have to outwit an enemy he never thought possible. The Men Who Stare at Goats was inspired by Jon Ronson’s non-fiction bestseller of the same name, an eye-opening and often hilarious exploration of the government’s attempts to harness paranormal abilities to combat its enemies.
